There is an entry in the parish records of St Mary’s, Newport for William’s baptism. Translated from Latin, it reads

Gwent Records Office

The civil registration of the birth reads:

When Born: Twenty Third May 1863.1 10 Castle Street, Newport, St Woolas
Name, if any: William

1 As is often the case, a later birth date is shown on the civil birth record than on the Baptism, possibly related to the delay in registering the birth. It seems certain that the date in the Baptism record is correct.

2 There is also discrepancy between the two documents relating to the mother’s maiden name. The name McNulty also appears elsewhere and is assumed to be correct.
