Timothy Leahy Griffiths Valuations

Timothy has two entries in the Griffiths Valuation for Kilcatherine. The first is in 1c, where he shares a small portion of 121 acres near Kilcatherine Point with 10 others. The total value for the acreage is £18-11-6, so the value of his share would have been approximately £1-12s. (£1.68 in decimal currency). He is additionally assessed for 4 shillings for ‘House, Office, Land’) which could have been any form of barn or shed.

The second is at 5a. Here he shares approximately 5 acres of land equally with Daniel Leahy, with each one’s share valued at £1. Here, too, he is assessed for a building, valued at 5s, while Daniel Leahy is assessed for a building valued at 4s.

It seems likely that the first area is for common grazing, perhaps of sheep, and that the second area is where Timothy’s farm would have been. It is possible that Daniel may have been Timothy’s brother and that an earlier farm may have been divided.

Below are three maps. The first is a historic map, with the original Griffiths information, and with areas 1 and 5 highlighted. The second shows the same image, overlaid on a modern satellite image. The third image has the farm location pinpointed on a current map, allowing zooming and panning.
