| “Around 1830, seven O’Sullivan brothers left Whiddy Island to seek their fortune. One went to Reentrisk , one to Foromanes, one to Deenish near Kenmare (the ancestor of Denny Island who had the pub a few miles on the Castletownbere side of Kenmare), and the other four arrived in Kilcatherine. Because of the fact that they came from Whiddy Island, they were known as the “Islands” The four brothers who came to Kilcatherine were: – (1) James Island; (2) Michael Island; (3) Cornelius Island and (4) Sean Island. The fourth brother Sean Island survived. He had 3 sons – Crohur, Flor (who was called Finin) and Sean – and gave each an equal part of his farm. Crohur was the grandfather of John (Con) O’sullivan and of Johnny O’Sullivan (father of the present Paudie Oisullivan). The male line of Finin’s family immigrated to Butte, Montana, U.S.A. Flor Island, Sean Island, and Crohur Island also had a sister Mairead (Margaret) who married in Knockanebracca to Stephen (or Stiadhna) Murphy, and was greatgrandmother of George and Johnny Murphy, etc.” Annals of Beara – Volume 2, Riobard O’Dwyer, Gold Stag Publications, 2009, P.349-50 |
