Sean O’Sullivan was born in Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay in about 1800 and settled in Kilcatherine around 1830. The name of his wife is not recorded and it is not known whether his children were born before, or after, he travelled to Kilcatherine. Because he came from Whiddy Island, his family were known as the Islands.1 There were four children.

1 Parish records for Eyeries or Bantry for this period are currently not available and the principle sources is Annals of Beara by Riobard O’Dwyer, which includes the following:
“Around 1830, seven O’Sullivan brothers left Whiddy Island to seek their fortune. One went to Reentrisk , one to Foromanes, one to Deenish near Kenmare (the ancestor of Denny Island who had the pub a few miles on the Castletownbere side of Kenmare), and the other four arrived in Kilcatherine. Because of the fact that they came from Whiddy Island, they were known as the “Islands” The four brothers who came to Kilcatherine were: – (1) James Island; (2) Michael Island; (3) Cornelius Island and (4) Sean Island. The fourth brother Sean Island survived. He had 3 sons – Crohur, Flor (who was called Finin) and Sean – and gave each an equal part of his farm. Flor Island, Sean Island, and Crohur Island also had a sister Mairead (Margaret) who married in Knockanebracca to Stephen (or Stiadhna) Murphy“
