Patrick Barry first appears in the 1851 census when he is fifteen years old and living with his father, John in Fothergill Street.
In 1861, he and his wife Bridget are in Reform Buildings. His father is also there, as well as their first child, John.
In 1871, four more children have been born, although the eldest, John, is not listed for some reason. He would only have been 11 years old at that point. Another child – Timothy, born in 1867 – is also absent. However, there is no corresponding death or burial record for him between 1867 and 1871. The census now gives a slightly more precise place of birth for Patrick, i.e. Cork, Ireland.
In 1881, another child, Ellen, has been born. However, Patrick’s father, John, has now died.
In 1891, Patrick’s and Bridget’s daughter, Honorah, has died in a fire at their home. The census now provides more precise information for their births. Patrick’s birthplace is given as Ring and Bridget’s as Clonakilty.
By 1901, Patrick and Bridget’s daughter, Catherine, has died. The census does not mention her daughter, Mary, although other records indicate that she lived with her grandparents throughout her childhood. A number of boarders are listed.
