Michael Connor Griffiths Valuation

Michael Connors has two entries in he Griffiths Valuation, which was carried out in Ireland between 1848 and 1864 and provides detailed information on houses and land.

Both of these show him as a tenant in Thomas Street, Dungarvan, the landlord being the Duke of Devonshire.

In the first image from 1848, Michael Connors’ record is the third on the page. The dimensions of the house are recorded as 23 feet long, 18 feet wide and 7 feet high. It is given a rating of 1B-, indicating that it was built of stone or brick and had a slate roof, was of medium standard but deteriorated by age and not in perfect repair. A discount of 1 shilling in the pound (about 5%) is given because of the need of repair, leaving the rent at 18 shillings (equivalent to 90p).

In the 1851 record Michael Connors’ record is at the bottom of the page and there is less detailed information. However, the rent now appears to have risen to £1-10s (£1.50)

The lhird image is a map of Dungarvan contemporary with the Griffiths Valuation and the fourth shows this overlaid against a modern map. The fifth image shows a section of another historic map of Dungarvan, showing the house numbers in St Thomas Street, which correspond those in the 1851 Giffifths Valuation, with 28 being at the western end of the street.

A modern map showing St Thomas Street is shown below. The buildings in St Thomas Street have been replaced since the time of Michael Connors.
