6: Woolaston House – Site of the Workhouse Infirmary – now a hospital – where Bridget Barry spent the last year of her life.
Many properties and some streets have since been re-developed. The historic maps below provides additional context on the locations concerned. In Map 1 from 1905, most of the locations can be seen but Mellon Square and Fothergill Street are no longer marked. Map 2 is from 1885 and show both of these locations which are highlited in red. Emlyn Street is shown with its former name, Cross Street. Map 3 shows the concentration of Irish immigrants in Newport in the 1850s. Fothergill Street, Castle Street, Mellon Street and Cross Street, later named Emlyn Street, all show large numbers.
