Castle Street, 1850

“Castle-street, consisting of 45 houses, is chiefly the residence of the lowest class of Irish. It is unpaved, undrained, and very filthy, the house refuse being thrown into the gutter. The owners have been summoned, but they plead, and with great justice, the want of a main sewer laid by the town.”

Report to the General Board Health on the Sewerage, Drainage, and Supply of Water, and the Sanitary Condition of the Inhabitants of the Borough of NEWPORT.
