MORT MOR (ROHANE) MCCARTHY & ELLEN O’SHEA (KNOCKANEBRACCA)

Mort Mor McCarthy came “cliamhain isteach’1 to part of the O’Shea farm. His house was very close to John (Mhichael) McCarthy’s present house. A sister of Mort Mor was the first wife of Batt Mor O’Shea of Cummeendeach, Ardgroom. Mort Mor McCarthy and Ellen O’Shea had 9 children:
(1) Peig (July 1843) married Paddy Leahy, son of Timothy Leahy and Margaret Leahy, Kiicatherine, and was grandmother of the present John Leahy;

(2) *Michael (Oct 1845) settled down in the home farm and married Johanna (Urdail) Harrington, daughter of Sean Harrington (Urdail) and Nora O’Shea, Direenamaelach;

(3) Jude (Apr. 1847) went first to Aspen, Colorado, U.S.A. Later returned and died at home in Knockanebracca;

(4) Nellie (Sept. 1848) married James Murphy, son of James Murphy, Castletownbere. James and Nellie immigrated to Aspen, Colorado;

(5) Joan (Mar. 1851)married Dan (Norr) Harrington, son of Dan Harrington & Norr O’Dwyer, Milleens, and was grandmother of Donal Harrington, Ardgroom Post Office;

(6) Johnny (June 1853) went first to Butte, Montana. Later returned, bought a farm in Lower Boffickil, and married Mary O’Driscoll (Minihane)- sister of Batt Minihane whose farm was later bought by Willie O’Neill, Inisfernard – daughter of Timothy Minihane and Johanna Murphy, Tra an Admaid, Lower Dreenagh, Eyeries. Johnny was father of Hannah McCarthy, N.T., Principal Teacher ofthe Kilcatherine (or officially-titled, Ballycrovane N.S.) National School. Hannah married Robert Harrington N.T., Principal Teacher in Ardgroom N.S. Robert came “cliamhain isteach” to Lower Boffickil from “The Grove”, Inches;

(7) Nano went to Aspen, Colorado and became Mrs. Holland;

(8) Abbey (Feb. 1858) also went to Aspen, Colorado;

(9) Morty (June 1864) went to the U.S.A.
